The Hope Foundation
The Hope Foundation is a registered charity working with street and slum children in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India. We work to free children and poor families from lives of pain, abuse, poverty and darkness. Living on the streets, children are exposed to horrendous physical and sexual abuse. Those who survive are left to fend for themselves, with no promise of a safe future. They are forced to work from as young as five years of age to earn money for food and so cannot go to school. HOPE works to free them from child labour. HOPE funds and operates over 60 projects.

Speaker: Rod Barton
Partners and friends welcome, this will be an interesting speaker. In 1971, Rod Barton applied for a junior scientist role in the Australian Department of Defence. Little did he know what it entailed: as the Cold War intensified, Barton was inducted into the murky world of espionage. For the next few decades, Barton lived a life straight from an adventure novel. In war-torn Mogashidu, he disarmed militia, while sleeping in rat-infested barracks. As a UN weapons inspector, he flew to Baghdad on special missions, interviewing top scientists to uncover an illegal weapons program, and raced to chemical firms across Europe, tracking materials sold to the Iraqis. After 9/11, Barton became senior advisor to Hans Blix, seeking the truth on Iraq’s WMDs. His clashes with the CIA over what he saw – and what he didn’t find – reveal the terrible politicisation of the War on Terror. It prompted him to step from the shadows and share a truth about Iraqi prisoners – and to tussle with the Australian government. This is an extraordinary behind-the-scenes account of a world marked by risk, secrecy, and individual acts of courage. The Life of a Spy will introduce you to a man of principle in a time of chaos and take you to the frontlines of politics and war. |

Tonight, we welcome our new group the “Youngs Friends of Unley Rotary”. What would Rotary or life be without an acronym “YFUR”. These are a group established by Rhonda and the New Generations team. They have mostly attended Rotary youth programmes and form part of the club’s alumni. I am sure this will be an entertaining evening as they introduce themselves and talk about their plans. Join us to make them welcome and who knows this may be the Genesis of a group of younger people who may ultimately join Rotary and bring it into new generation thinking. |

No Speaker - Member Only Meeting, please note I am still using Damiens as the name of our meeting place, it will change and when I know I will advise. Our meeting next week, is a committees meeting. For this meeting,as new committees are not yet known, the following is suggested. Please meet with your current committee and go through your year, identifying the highs and lows and what you would continue, any changes, and what you would not continue. This should take us up to 7pm and I will arrange for the meal to be served then or thereabouts. Following the meal at about 7.20, each Director will give a five minute feedback to the club. This to be followed by our usual meeting activities. |
