Guest Speaker: Padre David Shrimpton - Broken Hill Flying Patrol

Bob Mills introduced David who was zooming in from Broken Hill onto the big screen. Just 12 months after getting his pilot's licence for personal employment 20 years ago, the ordained Minister was asked by the Salvos to provide pastoral care to people in the Northern Territory. He jumped at the chance to combine his passions for ministry and flying to visit families on cattle stations and remote communities.
Eight years ago, David, then 57, moved to Broken Hill with Jennie his wife of 28 years who teaches with the School of the Air. They attended theological college together. He works for the Uniting Church flying his small plane to remote communities across the far west of NSW, and parts of SA and Qld.

David explained that he met Jerry Casburn in March when Jerry was with a Rotary team providing support for drought affected communities. He delivers pastoral care and practical support to individuals and families in outlying areas from Broken Hill. Much of his work is about listening to and supporting people in difficulties of which there have been many. He flies a Cessna 182 single engine and sometimes uses a 4WD. The aircraft engine has been overhauled and is expected to last another 10 - 12 years.  Until recently the North West of NSW had been in drought for a number of years with stations and small holdings struggling to survive. Even with the recent welcome relief with plenty of rain, station owners  have experienced financial difficulty restocking their properties due to high prices. It is remarkable what a transformation has taken place in 2022 with river beds which were dry now with water levels over 6 metres.

David provides pastoral care and ceremony officiating from the cradle to the grave. His chaplaincy services include 6 small schools and the Australian Army Cadets. He uses a donut machine to raise funds.

David was applauded for his address and looks forward to receiving the guest speaker bottle of wine from Jerry

SPOTS

Trevor McGuirk asked for volunteers to fill vacancies at the Thrift Shop this month - days needed include June 13, June 14, June 27 and June 28. Virginia volunteered to take the afternoon shift with Vera Ann on the 16th when Vera Holt is absent for July. Rotarians at the shop on Saturday mornings are required to vacuum the floors and clean the toilet.

Stephen Baker sought Thrift Shop replacements for the first Saturday in August when Haydn will be away and Jerry also (in his case for 4 months) . He also canvassed interest in bulletin training, with equal success.

Jerry Casburn who is due to head overseas shortly  struck it lucky when a brain aneurism was detected and removed.

Inductions: Judy Shaw and Ross Smith

Judy Shaw  was proposed for membership by Jerry Casburn. She was born into a Salvos family in Sydney. Most of her schooling was in Canberra and she lived in Melbourne for a number of years where she became a Salvation Army Officer 15 years ago. Chaplaincy and church positions have included Melbourne, Castlemaine, Mount Gambier and now Unley. Judy has been married to Vaughan for 24 years with daughters in Melbourne and Adelaide...4 grand-children. Loves her mission and working with people. Looking forward to enhancing this through Rotary.

President Ken inducted Judy into the club, appointed her to Community Services Committee (see photo with Director Brenton) and Robyn Carnachan will be her mentor.

Ross Smith was proposed for membership by David Middleton. Ross was born in Blackwood in 1976. His early working life was spent in the SA Attorney-General's office and Consumer Affairs. In 2015 he took off for Los Angeles where he coached gridiron. Returning to Adelaide in 2017 he was employed (and still is) by Giordano and Partners luxury real estate. Perhaps his 2 claims to fame are that he has a brother Daniel in the Hilltop Hoods and that he sold David's house.

President Ken inducted Ross into the club, appointed him to the Environment Committee and David will be his mentor.

Judy and Ross were warmly welcomed into the club.

Finale

Ken announced that volunteers are needed for the Bunnings BBQ this coming Sunday.
Christine thanked members for the stamp donations - $100 raised
Jerry donated a lucky fine of $10....his brain is now in better nick.
Bob Mills revealed that July 7 is the 45th anniversary of Geoff Hill's induction into the club
Trevor organised a raffle with 5 prizes  And the winners were.....Jerry, Greg, John Russell, Graham and Vera Ann.

The meeting closed at around the right time.

District Changeover at the Back of Beyond

Raj, Greg and Trevor attended the changeover in Weetulta (you will need a map to find it) last Sunday for the induction of DG Paul Thomas. It was held in a converted shed with open flame heaters and an audience of 200...but still a tad chilly. Country hospitality was good.

First woman takes office as president of Rotary International

EVANSTON, Ill. (June 29, 2022) – Jennifer Jones, member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, will be the first woman to take office as Rotary International President in the service organization’s 117-year existence on 1 July 2022.

During her one-year term, Jones will focus on building new relationships and establishing collaborations with organizations that share Rotary’s commitment to driving impact through humanitarian service and to developing leaders around the globe. She has also made Rotary’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion a key part of her presidential platform.
“Diversity has long been one of our core values and continues to serve as a foundation for how we interact with each other and our communities,” said Jones. “I know that my experiences and perspective as a woman mean that I bring a different lens to how I see and approach opportunities and challenges for our organization. I hope to be a catalyst for similar opportunities for leaders from all backgrounds that comprise the global mosaic of our organization. We are stronger, more creative, and more effective when we ask for and leverage those diverse perspectives to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges.”
As a professional communicator with more than 30 years of experience, Jones will also use her vocational strength as a storyteller to shine a light on the positive and lasting impact Rotary clubs are making to improve lives and strengthen communities across the globe. “This year, we are going to bring Rotary service projects center stage around the world. We will put a special focus on visible, high impact acts of service across our areas of focus, drawing attention to the incredible work that Rotary members are doing.” said Jones.

Jones officially took office as Rotary International President on 1 July 2022 in Ottawa, Canada at the mid-point of her cross-country tour. Dubbed Imagine Rotary Canada, Jones is traveling coast-to-coast, stopping at twelve hubs along the way to meet with local officials and participate in projects that address pressing issues including food insecurity, plastic and litter in waterways, and the safety of seasonal guest workers.
Jones will also mark her year as president by touring model examples of Rotary's impact in action. Throughout the year she will connect with Rotary members and clubs spanning the globe to explore and share learnings from Rotary projects, with a focus that includes:
  • the vital role of women health workers in the efforts to end polio in Pakistan;
  • a day in the life of a community health worker helping to reduce malaria in Zambia;
  • the efforts of 600 Rotary clubs to improve education for underserved students in Guatemala;
  • a former refugee who is now a Rotary Peace Fellow at the Rotary Peace at Makerere University, in Uganda;
  • health workers reaching children with live-saving vaccines in remote islands in the South Pacific; and
  • Rotary's efforts to bring clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to all of Haiti
As president, Jones will oversee Rotary’s top goal of eradicating polio. “When we harness our connections, deepen our relationships, and create new partnerships - our collective efforts can change lives for generations,” said Jones. “There is no better proof point of our impact than our effort to eradicate polio.”
Alongside its Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, Rotary has achieved a 99.9 percent reduction in polio cases, and contributed US $2.4 billion to protect more than 3 billion children from this paralyzing disease. Nearly 19.4 million people are walking today who otherwise would have been paralyzed by this vaccine-preventable disease, and 1.5 million people are alive who otherwise would have died. With the infrastructure Rotary helped create to end polio, a lasting global health legacy is now being used to protect millions of people from other diseases – including Ebola, malaria, and COVID-19.
About Jennifer Jones: Jennifer is the Founder and President of Media Street Productions Inc., a 25-year-old, award-winning media company in Windsor, Ontario. She has received many honors and recognitions including Rotary’s Service Above Self Award and the Citation for Meritorious Service, the YMCA Peace Medallion, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and Wayne State University’s Peacemaker of the Year Award – a first for a Canadian. Jennifer is married to Rotarian Nick Krayacich, a family physician.
