Guest Speaker/Poet - Rosh Amrein

David Middleton introduced Rosh who came to Australia 28 years ago from Iran. As a member of the Baha'i faith she was barred from tertiary education after the revolution of 1979. In Adelaide she studied dentistry, graduating in 2000. She owns  Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry on King William Road. It is a boutique clinic where dentistry is practiced holistically and tailor made to patient's need. Rosh is married to Andre and they have 2 boys, Arian and Naysan. To date, 2 books of poems have been published, translated from Persian. The new collection of poems are written in English and are being read for a public audience tonight for the first time.

Rosh explained that these poems are about exposing the suffering and depravation in her country of birth. The poems are in 3 parts:

1. The Story

Home invasion followed the execution of her uncle. it recounts the brutality of the invasion of her family home by bearded men flourishing guns, turning their world upside down.

Embassy recounts the cold reception received at the Australian embassy when obtaining a visa to migrate to Australia.

First breath of freedom is throwing of her headscarf after crossing the Iranian border. Women and girls were forced to wear this headgear and banned from donning bright clothes or using lipstick.

Connection to the homeland remains

2. The People

This is about the uprising of 2019 when an estimated 1500 people were murdered, and the heroines who fought for justice.

The girl of revolution street  took off her scarf, put it on the end of a stick, and waived it in the air. She inspired many others to follow suit but was arrested and jailed.

Yasaman, to celebrate International Women's Day, boarded a train and gave out flowers while talking tolerance and love. She and her 2 friends were put in jail for many years.

Nahid, mother of Pouyas. Her young son was cut down by a sniper during an anti- regime protest.

Nikta, a girl of only 13 years old, was also murdered by a sniper.

Nahvash, a poet, received a 20 year prison sentence for her conscientious objection. Rosh had the pleasure of hosting her in Adelaide after her release.....an angel.

3. Random Thoughts

We need to welcome refugees....let them in! 27,000 children have perished in hazardous boat crossings.

Turkey is now building a 270km wall to prevent refugees crossing from Iran and Afghanistan.

Think of the courage of the pregnant Ukrainian women who wanted to sacrifice her life to save her unborn baby.

Look at the freedom that little nippers enjoy in Australia and compare it to the harshness imposed in Iran.

Rosh reflected on the beauty of Shiraz.....however the holy place of the Baha'i faith there was destroyed.

Rosh paid tribute to the mentoring provided by Paul Duke during her dental studies.

Rosh was applauded for her brilliant story telling which brought home the inhumanity of the Iran government.

SPOTS

Bob Mullins provided details and photos of the 10 metre flagpole erected in 1998 at a cost of $5000 when he was the Prez. The ceremony was an elaborate affair with light horse, veterans, army, the Unley Mayor and the Unley City Band.

Jerry Casburn broke out in hives.....very spotty:

  • The visit to the City of Adelaide Clipper Ship followed by dinner next Tuesday. Please respond by Thursday. It must be said that the map Jerry provided is guaranteed to get you lost.....google maps is a much better proposition
  • Variety Club Zoo day on Tuesday 10 May which we are hosting with RC Campbelltown. We are feeding 1300 kids with special needs so must have plenty of volunteers.
  • Bunnings is holding its community event on 19 May.
  • The storage shed at Brighton is being torn down on 1 May.......Jerry and Trevor will be looking after our BBQ and other gear.
  • While JC is away for 4 months commencing mid July volunteers are needed to cover attendance.
  • At the District Conference we were afforded Level 1 status, having donated over US$100 per member to the Rotary Foundation.
Valerie Bonython thanked all who had helped with the carp fishing day at Mannum.....no fish, but a great day. It is intended to hold a debriefing soon.

Finale

The ladies have done it again! Wendy won the filthy lucre and Vivienne the fruchocs

The meeting closed at 7.52pm

Rotary responds to the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine

EVANSTON, ILL,. April 5, 2022 – Rotary announced today that it has raised more than $7 million to support locally-led relief efforts underway by Rotary clubs in Ukraine and neighboring countries.
“The need for immediate humanitarian aid is increasing with each passing day,” said John Hewko, CEO of Rotary International. “Rotary clubs in Europe and around the world, including our 1,100 members in Ukraine, have stepped up their relief work, with some on the ground helping those displaced by the war.”
  • In western Ukraine, Rotary members in Lviv are working with local authorities and major hospitals to provide urgent medical supplies and equipment.
  • In Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Rotary clubs have partnered with a railway company to offer transport to refugees and deliver essential items.
  • In France and Germany, Rotary members set up a central fund and working group to coordinate aid for Ukraine and border countries.
  • Rotary clubs in Poland have taken swift action to provide food, water, medical equipment, and transport and shelter for Ukrainian refugees.
Funds raised by the Rotary Foundation – Rotary’s charity arm, go directly to those in need through local Rotary clubs in Ukraine and other countries where substantial aid is needed for refugees.
Rotary clubs are also coordinating with partners to explore effective solutions to increased humanitarian needs. Rotary’s disaster response partner ShelterBox, is collaborating with Rotary members in Eastern Europe to provide essential supplies and access to temporary housing for those who have left Ukraine, along with medical and shelter supplies for communities in Ukraine. Items include mattresses for people living in schools and sports centers, shelter kits with tools and rope, hygiene kits, winter jackets, solar lights, and water carriers to help people survive as they are forced to live in damaged buildings.
