Announcements by President Graham

Enjoy the evening!

A meeting of the District's club presidents is to be held on Thursday.

Nominations are being sought for both RYLA and RYPEN.....closing 24 March

The One and All is having its last sail for the season on 24 March.

Dining with the Reno and the Salvos

Reno welcomed everyone in the chapel to this evening of thanksgiving for the support provided by Unley Rotary. He showed a video of the Salvos Vision of Service and a range of photos commencing with establishment of the Unley centre in1888.

The display was about the many volunteers, upgrading of the premises, food and coffee served, the Saturday market, Christmas gifts and hampers, Christmas Day luncheon, Red Shield Appeal and projects, including support for the boys home in Bali, Ruth and Naomi House, Bramwell House and engagement of Scotch College in serving of barista coffee for Saturday visitors. Reno has been looking after Unley for 17 years.

In the courtyard we were entertained by a talented pair of country and western musos in the form of Carrie and Stompie. Stompie assured the editor that this was the name that he was born with.

The meal comprised vegetable soup, roast chicken, pavlova, and melting moments with coffee .....all delicious! Each table had a Salvos host which worked rather well.....the editor's table had Sammy, Terry and Daniel

The Red Shield Appeal started 40 years ago and our club was there at the beginning. Guan, the  coordinator of the RSA explained that it was a tough year for fundraising, with Reno being the only one in SA to meet the target set.....and he was the 5th best in the country.

Reno expressed his thanks for the continued support of our club for the Appeal and our involvement in many of their endeavours, like the provision of wheelchair accessible toilets, refrigeration, Christmas Day furniture and help, post-tsunami assistance for Sulawesi and a number of other areas mentioned earlier. The coffee machine sourced by Robyn will work well for the barista adventure with Scotch College students. Proceeds from bottles being collected are being sent to the boys home in Bali.

A more recent initiative is to use the City Salvos van to serve coffee on a Thursday night to those sleeping rough and on Friday to visit playgrounds and flats. There is no shortage of opportunity for volunteering.

Reno thanked Gina, Joel, Rose, Wayne and Maureen for the cooking and delivery of the food.

Applause prevailed!

Finale

President Graham thanked Reno and his band of volunteers for a wonderful night. Wendy is to do Paul's shift on Thursday. The food and company was marvelous! Perhaps those Rotary households where the edibles are not that edible should seek advice and training from the Salvos chef. And the Salvos notebooks provided should help those who are prone to forget their responsibilities for our meetings set-ups and welcomes.

ROTARY NEWS

Virtual tour of One Rotary Center shines

By Bruce Baumberger, 2010-11 governor of District 6440 (northern Illinois, USA)

Vision Statement display and seating area in the west atrium on the 18th floor of Rotary International World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA.

As one of the two Rotary clubs normally conducting club meetings at One Rotary Center in Evanston, Illinois, USA, members of the Rotary Club of Evanston Lighthouse were touched by General Secretary John Hewko’s inspirational tour of Rotary World Headquarters. Seeing Room 711, the location of the first Rotary meeting, was a reminder that club members later this year will once again walk by it on our way to club meetings, just as we did prior to the pandemic.

Stories of Impact display in the west atrium on the 18th floor.

The tour of the 17th and 18th floors of Rotary’s World Headquarters showed us that the nerve center of Rotary International is ready to welcome Rotarians from around the world. The opportunity to see One Rotary Center virtually is a wonderful way to learn the value of an in-person tour (once conditions again allow it) for every Rotarian when they are in the Chicago area.
I recommend that every club show the video at their club meetings. It’s a great way to remind members about the fantastic work that we do around the world. Members of both the Evanston Lighthouse club and the Rotary Club of Evanston are excited about returning to in person meetings at the right time and welcoming our Rotary friends from around the world.

The Tale End

Naked Ambition

Two little old ladies, Connie and Jean, were sitting on a park bench outside the local town hall where a flower show was in progress.
The short one, Jean, leaned over and said, "Life is so boring. We never have any fun anymore. For $10 I'd take my clothes off and streak through that stupid, boring flower show!"

"You're on!" said Connie, holding up a $10 bill.

So, Jean slowly fumbled her way out of her clothes. She grabbed a dried flower from a nearby display and held it between her teeth. Then, completely naked, she streaked (as fast as an old lady can) through the front door of the flower show.

Waiting outside, her friend soon heard a huge commotion inside the hall, followed by loud applause and shrill whistling. Finally, the smiling Jean came through the exit door to the sounds of a cheering, clapping crowd.

"What happened?" asked Connie.

"I won $1,000 as 1st prize for 'Best Dried Arrangement'!"
