Chair David Middleton announced that PDG Jerry Casburn would be substituting for President Nathan.

Guest Speaker: Dr John Crowhurst The legacy of the anaesthesia event at Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941

David introduced John and gave an abbreviated version of his illustrious career......graduated in 1974 in Medicine and Surgery at Adelaide Uni; 1977-80 Anaesthesia Registrar at Adelaide Teaching Hospitals; 1996-2004 Reader in Anaesthesia, Imperial College University of London; senior consultant anaesthetist, Mercy Children's Hospital, Melbourne; and Chair of ANZ History Group (Anaesthesia Continuing Education Committee). He has taught /lectured on anaesthesia in 39 countries, has had 8 international professorships and has published 48 original papers. On retiring from Mercy Hospital in Melbourne he returned to Adelaide where he continues to teach.

This is a story about a big medical stuff-up!

John provided a summary of the benefits of anaesthesia, principally for prevention/relief of pain and relaxation of patients during operations. . In 1846 ether was discovered in Massachusetts as an effective anaesthetic and would continue to be used for more than 100 years....and still is in parts of the developing world. 20 years later morphine was discovered. Trained nurses were used for ether and related drug delivery across the globe, and it was not until 1936  when doctors began to be trained in the US. To this day there remains a strong element of nurse dispensing in the US under the supervision of doctors.

John provided graphic shots of the Japanese attack on the island of Oahu where the Pearl Harbor fleet was based in 1941. 21 ships were sunk with mainly naval casualties of 2403 killed and 1178 injured. The big problem for the injured was that most of the ether was destroyed in the attack. It is also quite volatile in temperatures of over 34 degrees. At that time other options included nitrous oxide, oxygen, morphine, cocaine and its derivatives, and pentothal.

Sodium Pentothal (a barbiturate which depresses heart function) had been used in elective surgery during the 1930s in the US without any deaths recorded but had not been trialed on trauma patients. It was brought in to cover the ether shortfall and proved to be the biggest killer of wounded personnel. Later studies showed pentothal to be 3-10 times more deadly than alternatives. The US scrapped it and went back to administering ether during the Korean War. But Britain applied it extensively 1941- 1951 with  better training.

The University of Melbourne established an Anaesthesia Faculty in 1944 to train doctors. By 1953 the range of treatments being taught included pethidine, epidural, methadone, hypothermia, and ventilators came in 1955.

Pearl Harbor was a catalyst for training in the use of anaesthetics. Over his 45 year professional involvement John reckons Pearl has been his Oyster.

John was thanked by acclamation.

Behind the Badge - Bob Mills

Bob was born in April 1943 in Peterborough - 5 kids in a happy household.  Plenty of 'Boys Own' adventures for the 15 years he was there.....probably just short of being a juvenile delinquent. In 1958 the family moved to Adelaide when his dad lost his job due to disability. Bob attended Woodville High and got a job with the Highways Department. He met Maria in Whyalla in 1962  and they married 3 years later.
In 1964 he qualified as an engineering surveyor, design. Further studies, mainly part time, while working with Adelaide City Council, saw him graduate as a civil engineer in 1974. From UNSW he gained the traffic engineer certificate in 1976. 1985 saw him appointed to Chief Traffic Engineer until 1994 when he resigned to follow business interests. A favourite moment in April1988 was when he and Maria sailed into the harbor on the 'One and All' with the other tall ships as part of the nation's Bicentennial Celebrations. Bob and Maria are proud parents of a daughter and two sons.

Bob's Rotary journey began in December 1989 when he was inducted into the Unley club (66 members at that stage) at Fernilee Lodge. He has held plenty of positions in the club and took on the Presidential role in 1994 for what proved to be a blockbuster year including the special event in support of the Peter Nelson Leukaemia Foundation with soon to be Governor Marjorie Jackson-Nelson and the rebuilding of the Unley Rotunda, which was a fabulous community project. He was an Assistant Governor which cured him of any desire to become DG. Today he continues to compile the club's history!

Bob was given a cheery (not teary) thank-you.

Ed Note....Bob advised that ACC no longer has a Chief Traffic Engineer.....probably prefer to make the city as car unfriendly as possible

Club Corner: Valerie Bonython Environment Director

Valerie is the inaugural director. Her committee comprises Patsy Beckett, Dennis Liddle, Sohelia Mostaghim, and Jurgen Stahl with support from Brendan Kenny. There are several projects underway:
  • A carp fishing competition at Mannum is planned for 10 April 2022
  • A Rotary Centenary Circle of Truth which involves planting of a circle of trees at Park 25 in the Adelaide Parklands. While Council will plant the trees, our club will plant the understory.
  • Calperum accommodation renovation and refurbishment. To date $3,800 has been spent, and many hours of labour applied by the Beckett, Bonython and Casburn teams, to bring the guest accommodation into habitable shape
  • Jurgen Stahl has taken on the task of pursuing improvements to recycling and quitting of polluting materials. Rotary should be seen as a leader in environmental enhancement.

Fay Reid - update on Solomons project.

Dalousu Village, Malaita Province.

Fay explained that the difficulties between Malaita and the Government in Honiara are long standing but were precipitated by  the Province's refusal to endorse the shift of allegiance from Taiwan to China. Grants from Taiwan and the US to Malaita had been misdirected. The project is going well but there is an urgent need for food after the PM cancelled the ferries  carrying food, fuel and equipment to the island.

Fay responded to urgent requests for food. Support of this nature lies outside the global grant and is being funded personally. Rice and powdered milk have already been purchased. There is a strong level of accountability applied to any money forwarded through Western Union. A bag of rice costing $18 will last a family a month. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Virginia Cossid reminded of the coffee chat this Friday....bring yourselves decked out in a Rotary shirt!

Trevor McGuirk gained the support of Ken for a Thrift Shop shift tomorrow.

Finale

Virginia Cossid won the filthy lucre....she is becoming a bit of an expert....while Dennis scored the fruchocs. Jerry explained that next week's FREE event will be at the Rotunda, 5.30 for 6.00pm. BBQ snacks are to be provided. Please wear the Rotary apparel and engage with the Unley Road Association members.

The meeting closed at 8.01pm.

The Thrift Shop Christmas Thank-You occasion

Last Thursday afternoon the TS volunteers assembled at Living Choice.

Among the many pleasing moments (and some indifferent attempts at singing and dancing) we had 3 presentations. Pam and Trevor presented Paul Harris Fellow certificates to  Jill Highett and to Akhtar Esmail-Zadeh for 15 years of volunteering, twice monthly at the thrift Shop.    Pam also presented flowers to Susan for the most hours of volunteering – 15 -20 hours per week.
