Youth Speakers

Rhonda Hoare expressed delight that Unley and McLaren Vale clubs had collaborated to share the cost of the One and All sponsorships.

One and All sailing adventure

Jorell Hart and Chloe Bricout bounced out with a description of hardship and heroism (almost). Day 1 saw them assemble on board at 5.30am, watches were allocated, luggage stowed, and beds allocated. At mid-day they set sail past Aldinga heading for Kangaroo Island. Everyone had to do 'dog watches' - night shifts of 3 hours at the bow of the ship looking for hazards and making safety checks.

They learnt how to run a ship, set sails and fasten halyards, steer night and day, tying of granny knots, and tidiness....50% of the time was spent cleaning.
Lack of sleep was hard due to the overnight watches. The editor did note how 'knackered' they looked on return to port. Discipline and respect prevailed. But a real positive was the confiscation of mobile phones which forced everyone to connect. Team building and making new friends were big positives. Favourite experiences included the dolphins running with the ship, beach activities, climbing the mast and swinging out from the ship.
Thank you to the Rotary Clubs of McLaren Vale and Unley.

Simone van Zyl also thanked our club for the unforgettable experience. She confirmed that the going was tough in the first two days...wondered why she was there. But then it clicked. She overcame her fear of heights and her self-confidence grew as she became attuned. Bonding and teamwork were great.
Editor's note - The voyages of the One and All have a distinct flavor of tough love.....just the sort of experience members of our club should be seeking......
Simone, Chloe and Jorell coming up roses

Briony Casburn presented Rhonda with a flowerpot as a thank-you for coordinating the event.

RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment)

Trevor McGuirk introduced Madison Spencer who had attended RYPEN in October. Madison is a Year 9 student at Adelaide Botanic High School. RYPEN was held at Nunyara, Belair, with great views of Adelaide. 40 young people lived in and were treated to a diverse program which included workshops with problem solving, public speaking, goal setting etc, 3 good guest speakers, and fun activities.....including bush dancing, tug of war and hot chocolate.
Thank you Unley Rotary

Young Friends of Unley Rotary (YFUR)

Chris Bui, who is studying to be a paramedic and who had attended RYPEN, gave a brief summary of how YFUR was formed from those sponsored in youth programs by Unley Rotary. It is all about giving back to the community. Through the medium of movie nights this group had raised and distributed a total of $4,950 to assist women and children with food packages in Afghanistan. They had also participated in the planting of trees for the Rotary Circle of Trees project. The next adventure will be helping with the Carols at the Rotunda on Sunday 11 December.

Our young speakers were all roundly applauded and presented with weight reducing chocolates by Trevor. A get-together of participants in Rotary youth programs from across the District will be held on December 4 at Linde Reserve.

Spots

Patsy Beckett asked that more members submit their Christmas dinner registrations. Toiletries donated by members will be passed onto the Salvos....Stephen suggested the key time for this will be at the meeting of 6 December. There was quite unfair rapturous applause when Patsy reported that the Bakers belated car trial effort last Sunday would have ended in defeat.

Trevor McGuirk reported that 2 earthquakes had hit the Solomon Islands but had not affected Malaita where Fay is working on our project.

Jerry Casburn urgently needs more volunteers for the following BBQs:
  • Multiple Births 9.30am - 2pm on Sunday 27 November at Hendrie Street Reserve, Park Holme
  • Bunnings BBQ on Monday 28 November
  • Unley Road Association on 4.30pm - 8pm on Wednesday 30 November at Unley Soldiers Memorial Gardens
He thanked Christina for her role with the Post Polio event yesterday

Brendan Kenny thanked those who had helped with the collection and labelling of O'Leary Walker Wines (Clare), including John Peacham and Linda, Patsy and Graham, and Greg.

Vivienne Wood needs a Thrift Shop replacement for Leonie on the afternoon of 3 December

Finale

Winners of the fabulous raffle included David Middleton in triplicate, John Russell, John Kikkert, Vivienne Wood and Bob Mills. Dennis was proud to report that Woodhouse where he has worked and managed for 25 years was rewarded in the recent SA Tourism Awards with 2 gold and 1 silver award for excellence. David M has happily and finally taken delivery of his battery powered car after a 11 month wait...perhaps we could all be given a demo run around the Adelaide super car circuit...plenty on hand when it runs out of juice.
Briony Casburn opened and closed the meeting of her McLaren Vale club which has been in business for 47 years.
Valerie explained her technique for husband hunting.
President Ken reminded of the need for assistance with the BBQs.

The meeting closed at 8pm on the dot - well done.

DEI is a difference maker

Posted on

By Mohan Kumar, charter president, Rotary Club of Bangalore Prime, India

Mohan Kumar, right, leads discussion sessions in his club designed to let everyone share their ideas.

I was given the opportunity to establish a plan aimed at increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our club as the chair of our DEI taskforce.
We have found that when we approach millennials or women to join Rotary, they look at the level of diversity in our club. We are a four-year-old Rotary club with 34 members, seven who are women. For the current Rotary year, we also have women serving as president, secretary, and treasurer. We have just one member below the age of 40 and six members in the range of 40-49. Through this lens, we knew that we could do better and be more relevant in the communities we serve.
Increasing our diversity, equity, and inclusion is imperative to our success and our future in Rotary. Our goal is cultural change. To do this, we need a shared language, candid conversation, and an understanding of how to be relevant to our communities.
Diversity goes beyond age, gender, race, and ethnicity. The diversity of thoughts and of people fosters a strong sense of belonging. We had a joint meeting with six clubs that I facilitated involving a conversation about DEI. Most of the participants realized the importance of leveraging these initiatives and aligning them to our club goals.
We need to make inclusivity more than an initiative, though, and make it a mindset. Rotary Fellowships and Rotary Action Groups are great pockets of conversation which thrive on inclusivity. We are educating our members about these groups and asking that each member be a part of one Rotary Fellowship and one Rotary Action Group.
“When a flower doesn’t bloom – you fix the environment, not the flower”
Our club members are now encouraged to bring their own projects to the table for discussion. We are working on having hybrid weekly meetings through appropriate IT platforms. This will ensure better attendance and engagement.
To augment our membership, we are considering having potluck dinners. The diversity of the dishes will celebrate different heritages and broaden our cultural understanding. Members are encouraged to bring guests. Many have taken an interest in organizing these dinners ensuring a sense of inclusivity.
To fuel agility, we will have huddles that circumvent boring meetings. These huddles will focus on allowing each person to have the same amount of time to speak as others. The journey of a DEI program is about having candid conversations on an on-going basis. There will be successes and setbacks, but moving forward is critical. We can’t prepare ourselves and Rotary for the future if we are not elevating and activating all people at their fullest capacities.
DEI is the bedrock of any progressive organization.
