President Nathan, also acting as meeting Chair, welcomed Sorel and John Campbell ...who was invited to introduce himself. The helmet was for protection!

Guest Speaker: PDG John Campbell - Australian Rotary Health

John explained that he had a 42 year Rotary history, commencing with Interact at Adelaide High in the '60s, to Edwardstown Rotaract in 1971 (which back then had a strong association with Unley Rotaract), a deviation into Apex when he worked in Port Pirie and then to Adelaide Light Rotary when he returned to Adelaide. He served across the full array of positions. In these clubs. In 2014/15 he was appointed District Governor for District 9520.

John is a Director of Australian Rotary Health  [and AG Di Clements helps look after the District program] which has delivered the longest serving and largest health research and community education programs of any NFP in the country. And it has proved to be very effective. ARH had its genesis back in 1981 when the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome motivated the formation of a large Rotary fund for research into SIDS. Researcher  Terry Bligh studied the circumstances of these deaths in Tasmania and concluded that the strongest causal link was babies sleeping on their stomachs. In 1991 his findings were released and published in the Lancet. There was a 40% improvement very quickly and 80% over time.

ARH dedicates itself to delivering healthy bodies and healthy minds through advanced medical research in key areas and indigenous health scholarships. John provided a list of 31 podcasts from researchers. Grants of up to $70,000 are provided for a maximum of 3 years, renewable. There are 60 scholarships currently operating.

Mental Health has been the key focus of ARH since year 2000. This was then directed to young Australians in 2012 and will shortly be further rationalised to focus on children 0-12.. There are two major influences in play namely genetics and family functionality where the influence of drugs, alcohol and domestic violence can be devastating. Each year of the 300,000  children born 14% (42,000) will be seriously affected during their youth. 1 in 5 people will experience mental illness which will flow onto as many as 80% of the population. Mental illness is the mot serious form of disability for the young.

October is World Mental Health Month and October 10 is WMH Day...the signal for fundraising. John outlined initiatives taken by various clubs like long sponsored walks, wine sales and even a virtual walk during Covid lock down last year which raised $5139.

It must have been the thought of a long long walk which terrified our executive......hence a virtual cheque for $500 was presented to John by the Prez................like to see him cash it a bank!

John was thanked by acclamation.

Spots

Chris Davis provided a summary of the presentations surrounding SA Police Officer of the Year.

  • Due to forecast inclement weather the awards ceremony at 10.30am this Thursday has been shifted to the Fenwick Room of the SA Police Club, 27 Carrington Street, City...all welcome......there will be no reception following this.
  • Next Tuesday our club will host the POOTY awardee with his family and Police personnel. It is a special occasion. Partners are welcome. Neat dress would be appreciated. Remember to sign up and prepay for the event. Bob Mills will be presenting a potted version of POOTY.
Stephen Baker announced that the Overseas Specialist Surgical Association of Australia (OSSAA), which our club helped form, will be holding a fundraising film afternoon on Sunday 14 November at Wallis Cinema Mitcham. James Bond No Time to Die. Cost $20pp and bookings through trybooking.

President Nathan, on behalf of Patsy, reminded of the Car Trial on 31 October....see note further below.

Rhonda Hoare - New Generation Committee

Each committee has been asked to present a summary of its activities.....New Generation is first cab off the rank.

NG committee members include Jason Booth, Judy Corcoran, Brendan Kenny, Trevor McGuirk, Kym Teh with support from Stephen Baker, Reno Elms and Con Pappas

There are a number of Rotary Youth programs supported by our club:
  • Rotary Youth Leadership Award - RYLA aims to enhance young people's ability to work together effectively, to build self confidence and engender leadership - this year we sponsored two young people from Afghanistan, namely Latifa and Abdullah. The transformation of the attendees was rewarding.
  • National Youth Science Forum - NYSF is an elite science training ground. This year we are sponsoring Oliver Manning who has been accepted for the class of 2022.
  • Youth Sailing Challenge - 5 days of fun and hell aboard the One and All with its very small gallows and Sophia on board,
The inaugural Youth Music Competition, with help from Tabor College,  was despite considerable trepidation, a resounding success this year. Encouraging the young people to present their own compositions worked a treat. More help with identifying contacts in each school would help for our next adventure.

Programs cancelled this year were Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) due to Covid and Health of the River (insufficient nominees).

A generous budget will enable programs like Operation Flinders, Science Experience, Youth Parliament and Fish Tank to be supported.

A BBQ has been arranged for young people we have sponsored recently with the aim of encouraging them to design their own projects. We have been invited to manage RYLA in September 2022 and discussions are to be held with RC Campbelltown.

Finale ....

Talk about bizarre hats......John Campbell chose Paul Duke's Irish creation as the best in the room...which it clearly was......but check out the jokes section.

Dynamic duo Virginia and Christina cleaned up the cash and chockies respectively

Reno Elms put a bag of cash on the table representing the money he had saved for happy fines. He related that his time at Unley Salvos was drawing to a close after 18 years. The changeover to Judy Shaw will be on January 12. His new job will be looking after Emergency Services. In the meantime he will be shifting house from Marion Street to Fairford St.
There will be time to honour Reno for all that he has done and achieved for the local community.

It must have been the hat....Paul Duke offered to fill David Middleton's morning shift at the Thrift Shop this coming Saturday and Reno's on the 30th.

The meeting closed at 8.09 pm....

Patsy Beckett wishes to remind everyone that registrations for the fabulous car trial (to be held on 31 October) close on Tuesday 19 October....proceeds from the $30 per car entry fee will go to supplying mosquito nets for PNG.

ROTARY NEWS

Empowering girls in Mexico

By Sofía Brega, Rotary Positive Peace Activator and member of the Rotaract Club of Juárez Centro, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Sofia Brega founded Activators de Paz Ciudad Juárez, a group that trains other agents of change and develops Positive Peace content for schools.

Growing up in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, I always knew I wanted to work on girl empowerment and the rights of women. I wanted to be an activist for women’s rights, and learned about Girl Up, an organization that strives to advance opportunities for girls to be leaders. It’s a club-based initiative that supports projects that focus on women’s rights and builds awareness of current challenges for women in Mexico and elsewhere.
Not long after I learned about the organization, I founded a Girl Up club in Ciudad Juárez –Girl Up Fronterizas. Who knew all it would take was one Google search and a group of aspiring women that are committed to girl empowerment.
A couple of months later, I heard about a Positive Peace Workshop being held by Rotary and the Institute for Economics and Peace in Mexico. After attending the workshop and a follow up training for trainers, I was accepted into the Rotary Positive Peace Activator program and on my way to becoming a Rotary Positive Peace Activator. I had no idea how much impact this workshop would have on my goals, and my work with Girl Up, or the way in which I viewed issues of girl empowerment and women’s rights.

Change in perspective

Although I was a committed activist for women’s rights, it wasn’t until I attended the workshop that I realized that my entire discourse was coming from the wrong perspective. I was focusing on violence and conflict – where instead I should have been talking about Positive Peace, and how my efforts on girl empowerment can support that.
Following the workshop, I founded the group, Activators de Paz Ciudad Juárez – or Peace Activators of Ciudad Juárez – a group that trains other agents of change and develops Positive Peace content for schools. Using the IEP methodology, the group also explores the possibility of creating indicators that measure Positive Peace in our communities at the municipal level.
I have now had the opportunity to share my experiences and knowledge in more than 10 forums, conferences, and trainings. One time, while working in a women’s shelter, a teenage girl approached me and proudly said:
“The other day I was about to get mad with a girl from here [the shelter], but then I remembered what you said about trying to express my feelings in a more peaceful way.”
The previous day, this girl had attended one of our Girl Up workshops, Negotiation and Non-Violent Communication. This workshop was created as a direct result of my attendance at the Positive Peace Activator Program. I felt all our effort was worth it.

Peace and gender

My career goal is very clear – following my experiences of working with Positive Peace, I want to become an intellectual authority on issues of peace and gender, and to be a consultant on the design and evaluation of public policies. As a member of Rotaract, and being just 21 years old, I’m striving to do my part in bringing about sustainable and lasting social change.
There are thousands of members of Rotaract just like me who want to see the issue of girl empowerment brought front and center. As a member of Rotaract, and as a future member of Rotary, I want to give back to Rotary the knowledge, the energy, and the experiences that I have gained working on the issue of girl empowerment and Positive Peace.

The Tale End.....

With due apology to the Irish......

Paddy, who was on holiday from Ireland on Bondi beach couldn't seem to make it with any of the girls.

So he asked the local lifeguard for some advice. Mate, it's obvious,' says the lifeguard, 'you're wearing them old baggy swimming trunks that make ya look like an old geezer. They're way outta style....

Your best bet is to grab yourself a pair of Speedos - about two sizes too small and drop a fist-sized
potato down inside 'em. I'm tellin' ya mate....you'll have all the babes ya want!'

The following weekend, Paddy hits the beach with his spanking new tight Speedos, and his fist-sized potato.

Everybody on the beach was disgusted as he walked by, covering their faces, turning away, and laughing, looking sick!

So Paddy went back to the lifeguard again and asked him, 'What's wrong now?'

Mate!' said the lifeguard, ‘............the potato goes in the front!'
